Basil

What is it?
Basil is a wonderfully aromatic herb with a sweet, slightly spicy tang. Originally from Southeast Asia and Africa, it’s now a staple in Italian cuisine, while Thai basil is commonly used in Asian dishes. You’ll recognize basil by its fresh flavor, and it’s often used to add taste to pasta, pizza, sauces, and curries.

Tip:
Dried basil only really releases its flavor when you give it time, so add it early in the cooking process – earlier than you’re used to with fresh basil.

Fun Food Fact!
Basil is also known as the “king of herbs,” as its name comes from the Greek word for “king” and refers to ancient times when the plant was used in royal rituals.

Recipe Basil:
Basil is a great flavor enhancer that pairs well with Italian dishes. Mix 4 tablespoons of dried basil, 50 grams of grated Parmesan, 40 grams of pine nuts, 1 clove of garlic, and 100 ml of olive oil. Blend well, and you’ve got your own homemade pesto!
