15 Feb Chili peppers
What is it? The species Capsicum Annuum (paprika, pepper) produces different types of fruits, from sweet peppers to spicy chili peppers. The taste of chillies can vary in sharpness depending on where you buy the chillies. For example, the version grown in the Netherlands is less sharp than the one in Spain. They do well in meat and fish dishes, nasi, chili con carne and all kinds of sauces. Dried chillies can be used as a substitute for fresh ones.
Tip! You can store dried pepper for decades. During cooking, they rehydrate and release their spicy flavor into the dish.
Food fact: All peppers are green when they grow on the plant. They slowly turn orange and then red due to the sun and heat.
Recipe: In for a spicy stew?
Stew on the menu? Try adding a dried pepper during the cooking process of the vegetables. Especially tasty when it’s cold outside! The longer you let the pepper cook, the spicier, so you can make it as hot as you want.
