The French themselves like to say, ‘Un fromage pour chaque jour de l’année… et bien plus!’ From creamy Brie to spicy Roquefort – there are more than 1,200 official cheese varieties. No wonder cheese is served there as a full course.

Each region has its own pride: think of Comté from the Jura, goat’s cheese from the Loire Valley, or the smelly but beloved Époisses from Burgundy (which is seemingly not allowed on French public transport because of its smell!). And did you know that Camembert is traditionally sold in a wooden box to protect its soft interior?
